THE GLOBAL LEADERSHIP BOARD

Initiated in 2015 to boost US-Asia Institute’s outreach in the region and its ability to facilitate communication and understanding, the Global Leadership Board (GLB) is comprised of prominent Asian leaders who provide invaluable advice on USAI’s programs and diverse perspectives on the region. The GLB also provides insight into how the Institute can best work to fulfill its mission across the region.

Kenneth Walsh

US-ASIA INSTITUTE | CHAIRMAN OF GLOBAL LEADERSHIP BOARD

Mr. Kenneth Walsh is Chairman of USAI’s Global Leadership Board and Managing Director of Southeast Asia at Fairfield Maxwell in Jakarta, Indonesia. Ken has over 42 years of management experience in the petrochemical and oil industry and had postings in various countries in South America, Europe, and Asia.

Two years after joining Fairfield Maxwell, Ken helped the firm set up its Southeast Asia office in 1988 and has managed the office since then. His works focuses on developing strategic alliances and business opportunities for the firm. Prior to his position with Fairfield Maxwell, Ken was Marketing Director at Belen Enterprises International in Ecuador from 1982 to 1985 and Vice President of Trading for all West Coast operations with Sentry Refining from 1979 to 1981. He has also worked for International Petchemco, Inc., and Commonwealth Oil & Refining Company.

Ken received his B.B.S. in Marketing from St. Peter’s University, New Jersey in 1973.

Amb. Puteh Alam

BRUNEI | DEPUTY PRESIDENT OF ARBITRATION ASSOCIATION BRUNEI DARUSSALAM (AABD)

Ambassador Pengiran Indera Negara Pengiran Anak Haji Puteh Ibni Al-Marhum Pengiran Pemancha Pengiran Anak Haji Mohd Alam, or Ambassador Puteh Alam, is an international arbitrator and consultant. He currently serves as Deputy President of Arbitration Association Brunei Darussalam (AABD). Prior to his current position, he was the Ambassador to Japan and the United States of America. While he was the Brunei Ambassador to the United States, he was serving concurrently as the non-resident Ambassador to the Republic of Peru and the United States of Mexico. Mr. Penigran Anak Puteh Mohd Alam also served as the Deputy and Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. In that position, he was involved in policy decisions on issues relating to international law, land and maritime boundaries of the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea, and the South China Sea. He specializes in investment arbitration, sports arbitration, international commercial arbitration, and international law.

Mr. Penigran Anak Puteh Mohd Alam received his bachelor’s degree from the University of London, MA in International Relations from the Fletcher School at Tufts University, a MJur law degree from the University of Birmingham School of Law, and several postgraduate diplomas and certifications.

Dr. Mohamed Idwan Ganie

INDONESIA | MANAGING PARTNER OF LUBIS GANIE SUROWIDJOJO (LGS)

Dr. Mohamed Idwan (‘Kiki’) Ganie is the Managing Partner of Lubis Ganie Surowidjojo (LGS). Dr. Ganie is a Chairman of the Association of Indonesian Anti-Trust Lawyers, a member of the Regional Panel of the Singapore International Arbitration Centre (SIAC), and a fellow (FSIarb) of the Singapore Institute of Arbitrators. LGS has over a hundred lawyers and experience representing a diverse range of clients, including domestic and multinational corporations, public and private companies, Government instrumentalities and State Owned Enterprises.

Dr. Ganie has more than 30 years of legal experience, and specializes in commercial transactions and commercial litigation, including alternative dispute resolution and has acted as an expert in a number court and arbitration proceedings. His expertise covers general corporate/company law, banking law, finance, bankruptcy and restructuring, mining, investment, acquisitions, infrastructure projects/project finance, antitrust, and shipping/aviation, with a particular focus on corporate governance and compliance. Dr. Ganie’s international commercial transaction and litigation clients include: Goldman Sachs (US), Temasek Holdings (Singapore), Hutchison Whampoa (Hong Kong) and Mitsui (Japan).

He graduated from the Faculty of Law of the University of Indonesia and holds a PhD in Law from the University of Hamburg.


Charles Gunawan

INDONESIA | COUNTRY ADVISOR TO FARALLON CAPITAL MANAGEMENT

Mr. Charles Gunawan is a Country Advisor (Indonesia) to Farallon Capital Management. Prior to that, Mr. Gunawan was a Managing Director and Co-Head of the investment banking division of Credit Suisse Indonesia. Prior to Credit Suisse, Mr. Gunawan was a Managing Director in the investment banking division of Goldman Sachs Singapore, where he focused on origination and execution of advisory and financing deals in Indonesia. Mr. Gunawan graduated from Universitas Indonesia with a Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, and from UCLA Anderson School of Management with an M.B.A.

Don Lam

VIETNAM | CEO AND CO-FOUNDER OF VINACAPITAL

Mr. Don Lam is Chief Executive Officer and Co-Founder of VinaCapital, one of the leading fund managers in Vietnam. Before founding VinaCapital, Mr. Lam was a Partner at PricewaterhouseCoopers Vietnam, where he led the Corporate Finance and Management Consulting practices throughout the Indochina region (Vietnam, Laos, and Cambodia). He has also held management positions at Deutsche Bank and Coopers & Lybrand in Vietnam and Canada.

He is an authority on investments, mergers and acquisitions, corporate restructuring, and privatizations. He is a frequent speaker at international investment seminars and was featured as Vietnam’s “Mr. Wall Street” in Fortune magazine.

Mr. Lam holds a B.A. in Commerce and Political Science from the University of Toronto.

AMB. EDWARD LEE

SINGAPORE | FORMER AMBASSADOR OF SINGAPORE

Ambassador Edward Lee spent 36 years in the Singapore Foreign Service, a total of 18 of which were in Indonesia from the 1970's. He was Singapore's Ambassador in Jakarta, 1994-2006. His previous appointments include being High Commissioner in Brunei Darussalam (1984-90), and Ambassador in the Philippines (1990-1993). For his services, he received the Meritorious Service Award from Singapore, the Order of Sikatuna, Rank of Datu (Grand Cross) from the Philippines and the Bintang Jasa Utama from Indonesia.

Since his retirement from the Foreign Service in 2006, Ambassador Lee sits on a number of boards in Singapore and Indonesia.  He holds a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Singapore and a Masters of Arts from Cornell.

Andi W. Setianto

INDONESIA | BAKRIE SUMATERA PLANTATIONS

Mr. Andi W. Setianto is a Director of Bakrie Sumatera Plantations, a legacy of 1911 Dutch and American rubber plantations and now sustainable-renewable vegetable palm oil and rubber plantations. Indonesia is the world’s number one palm oil producer with growing smallholders’ ownership, and together with Malaysia supplies more than 80% of the world’s palm oil. Mr. Setianto is a Wall Street and Indonesian-licensed investment banker with a passion for the circular economy and sustainable productivity related to Indonesian palm oil and tropical rainforest conservation. With the US-Asia Institute, Mr. Setianto is working toward building an even closer US and Asia relationship through trade and climate change mitigation cooperation in tropical rainforest conservation and global natural carbon/CO2 capture and storage.

Mr. Setianto is a finance professional with 27 years’ experience including at Salomon Brothers and Mandiri Sekuritas investment banks, the latter being Indonesia’s largest and wholly-owned subsidiary of Bank Mandiri the largest Indonesian bank. He holds a Master of Business Administration degree from The Joseph M. Katz Graduate School of Business, University of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, USA, and an Electronics Engineering degree from the University of Indonesia.

Battsetseg Shagdar is Freedom lover and quite a leader and "force of nature" in her own right. She calls women and young people to emerge the Democracy leadership order to meet influential political people and leaders here in the USA and to learn more about how the American consultants in order to get the best political campaign training possible and learn more about how to utilize strategic planning to their advantage in their own campaigns and career development in Mongolia.

Her vision and deep desire and willingness to learn, her honesty as well as her belief that the Democratic process was one she felt called and driven to bring to her country of Mongolia.

Battsetseg understands that the women Democratic leaders needed to learn more in order to become more effective in their campaigns and she stopped at nothing to get them the training they needed.

Amb. Tan Sri Dato’ Ajit Singh

MALAYSIA | FORMER MALAYSIAN AMBASSADOR AND SECRETARY-GENERAL OF ASEAN

Ambassador Tan Sri Dato’ Ajit Singh was born and educated in Malaysia. He joined the Malaysian Foreign Service in 1963.

In a career spanning just over 30 years, he served in various positions in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and at Malaysian Missions abroad in Canberra, Addis Ababa, (Ethiopia) and New York. He was Malaysia’s Ambassador in Vietnam, Austria, Brazil, (with concurrent accreditation to Bolivia, Colombia, Peru and Venezuela) and Germany.

He was elected the Secretary-General of ASEAN, which carries the rank of a Minister and served a five-year term from 01 January 1993 to 31 December 1997. In recognition of his services, both Laos and Vietnam awarded him their prestigious Friendship Medals in December 1997. He was also awarded the Panglima Setia Mahkota award, which carries the title of “Tan Sri”, by His Majesty the King of Malaysia at His Majesty’s Official Birthday on June 6 1998. The Indonesian Government awarded him the “Bintang Jasa Utama” in February 1999, in recognition of his work in ASEAN and in helping to improve Malaysia – Indonesia relations.

After leaving the Secretariat, he joined the National Petroleum Oil Company, PETRONAS, where he worked as Director, International Business Ventures from August 1997 to October 1999. He left to help establish the Boao Forum for Asia in Hainan, China and was elected as its first Secretary-General in February 2001.

Upon his return, he became the Advisor for India Business for IJM Corporation Bhd. and is now a member of the Malaysia-India CEO Forum set up by the Prime Ministers of the two countries, the Advisor to the Malaysia-India Business Council, (MIBC), and Chairman of the Board of Trustees of Mercy Malaysia, a well-known humanitarian organization providing aid and working in disaster and relief-stricken areas and countries.

In early 2009, he was appointed to the then Indian Prime Minister’s Global Advisory Council of Overseas India. In Jan. 2011, he was awarded India’s highest award for an overseas Indian, the Pravasi Bharatiya Samman Award, by the Indian Government.

PHILIPPINES | FORMER GOVERNOR OF THE BANGKO SENTRAL NG PILIPINAS (BSP)

Former Governor Amando M. Tetangco, Jr. is the Governor of the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP). He was first appointed in 2005 and re-appointed in 2011. As BSP Governor, he serves as Chairman of the Monetary Board, the BSP’s principal monetary policy-making body. As head of the BSP, Governor Tetangco is Chairman of the Philippines’ Anti-Money Laundering Council (AMLC) and the Financial Stability Coordination Council (FSCC). At the Bank for International Settlements (BIS), he is Chair of the Meeting of Small Open Economies. He has also held chairmanships of various international committees: the BIS Asian Consultative Council, the Financial Stability Board Regional Consultative Group for Asia, and the Alliance for Financial Inclusion Steering Committee.

Prior to becoming Governor in 2005, he was Deputy Governor in-charge of the Banking Services Sector, Economic Research and Treasury of the BSP. He also served as Alternative Executive Director of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) in Washington, DC from 1992 to 1994.

Governor Tetangco obtained a degree in economics from the Ateneo de Manila University, cum laude, and his Master’s in Public Policy and Administration with a concentration in Development Economics at the University of Wisconsin-Madison.

Dr. Sarasin Viraphol

THAILAND | EXECUTIVE VICE PRESIDENT OF THE CHARON POKPHAND GROUP (CP GROUP)

Dr. Sarasin Viraphol is the Executive Vice President of the Charon Pokphand Group (CP Group), a Thai transnational company. The CP Group core businesses consist of agro-industry and food, retail and merchandising, and the telecommunications.

Prior to joining the private sector, Dr. Sarasin served in Thailand’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs for twenty years between having served in China and Japan, and the Philippines. Between 1968 and 1976, Dr. Sarasin lectured at Chulalongkorn University as an assistant professor.

Dr. Sarasin received his PhD from Harvard University in East Asian languages and history. His academic and professional interests include Asian studies, international development and trade.
